For nearly thirty years the Community Hospice Hope Chest Thrift Stores proceeds have been solely used to support our patients, families and programs. Since the early 1990s, the Hope Chest Thrift Stores have been an integral part of the community for shoppers to find quality used goods. We are grateful for the continued generosity from local donors who support our mission.
In 2020, one undertaking that many of our community members seem to of had in common was Spring Cleaning. During the COVID-19 public health emergency crisis, and as Stay-at-Home orders were directed, the “I’ll get to it later” excuse that often comes with the chore of cleaning out cluttered basements, closets and attics suddenly became a mission. As a result, and after receiving many calls regarding donations, in late March 2020 donation trucks were parked at the Spyres Way office to create a “self-service” drop off while our Hope Chest Thrift Stores were closed. The outcome of our solution to the community’s donation-source needs resulted in an ample surplus that helped the Hope Chest Thrift Stores fill their shelves after reopening.
In 2020, the Hope Chest Thrift Stores generated $4,595,679, which was a 14% decrease from the previous year due to our store closings because of the public health emergency crisis. As a direct result of the pandemic and the State’s guidelines for store capacity, customer counts were down by 25% from last year.

Our Recycling and “Green” initiatives have been challenging due to the public health crisis; however, they remain a continued focus. We are proud to have been named the recipient of the City of Modesto Business Recycling Award for the ninth year in a row. In 2020, 36,178 pounds of E-Waste and over 1,600,757 pounds of reprocessed items were recycled through the Hope Chest’s Logistics Center and saved from local area landfills. Our recycling efforts provide additional, and much needed, funds for Community Hospice as it continues to fulfil its mission.
